Classification (Odd One Out)

Full Concept with Example  Classification  (ODD One OUT)

Classification is a process of groping various objects on the basis of their common properties.

Question on classification are designed to test candidate's ability to classify given objects and find one which does not share the common property with the other objects of the group.

Find the odd word / letters / numbers / numbers pair from the given alternatives.

Types of classification

(1) Words Classification

(2) Alphabet classification

(3) Numbers Classification

(4) Miscellaneous Classification

(1) Word Classification: In this types of classification, different objects are classified on the basis of common features / properties- name, places, uses, situations, origin etc.

Question: Which one does not belong to that group?

(a) Ears              (b) Hands               (c)  Fingers               (d) Eyes

Sol: Except Fingers all other part of body are in pairs. so that option (c) is answer correct

Question: Which one does not belong to that group?

(a) Bud            (b) Branch          (c) Leaf        (d) Plant

Sol: All items are the parts of a plant. so that plant does not belong to the group. the answer is (d)

Question: Find the odd one out.
(a) Ring (b) bangle (c) Tyre (d) Plate

Sol: Except (d) all items are holes - Ring, Bangle, Tyre But plate not not. Answer is (d) option correct.

(2) Alphabet classification: In this type of classification, letter of alphabet are classified in a group using a particular method or rule.
Rules or  methods used for such classification are often simple, and hence can easily be understood.

Question: find the odd one out.
(a) PSRQ (b) CGEF (c) JMLK (d) VYXW

Sol: pattern used for classification is place of alphabets in order (+3, -1, -1). since option (b) does not follow the pattern, it is odd in the group.

Question: Find the odd one out.
(a) DEHG (b) RSVU (c) JKNM (d) LMQP

Sol: Method used for the classification is place of alphabets is the order (+1, +3, -1). Option ) LMQR does not follow method.
Hence, it is the odd one.

Question: Find the one that does not belong to the group.
(a) EHG        (b) JML         (c) PSR        (d) UYX

Sol: In all other groups, there is a gap of one letter as in the alphabet between first and third letters.

(3) Numbers Classification: In this type or classification, different numbers are classified on the basic common features/ properties- even, odd, natural number, square, quabe, etc.

Question: Find the odd one out.
(a) 4:63                (b) 1:0                (c) 5:124             (d) 2: 15

Sol: In this classification second number is one less than the cube of the first number. So that option (d) does not  belong & follow the group pattern.

Question: Find the odd one out.

(a) 32: 15 (b) 86 :42  (c) 56: 26  (d) 74:36

Sol: Second number is one less than the half the first number. so thst, option (c) is correct answer.

Question: Choose the number which is different from other in the group.

(a) 49                (b) 63             (c) 77             (d) 81

Sol: 49 = 4+9 = 13 = 1+3 = 4 = 2 square
        63 = 6 +3 = 9 = 3 square
        77  = 7+7 = 14 = 4+1 = 5
        81 = 8+1 = 9 = 3 square

(4) Miscellaneous Classification:  In this types of classification, any rule other than that described above can be used for classification OR grouping.

Questions on such pattern do not necessarily Use the alphabets, words and numbers. here other mathematical symbols can be used.

Question: Find the odd one out.
                  (a) FRIEND   (b) SHIP  (c) FRESH  (d) FISH

Sol: In all the words except (d), letters have been selected in the foreword directions so that\, option (d) is correct answers.

Question: Choose the odd word.
(a) Nun   9b) Knight   (c) Monk  (d) Priest

Question: Which one of the following is different from other members?
(a) Google         (b) Windows            (c) Linux             (d) Mac

Question: Find the odd one out .
(a) J 10 T      (b) G 7 N    (c) O 15 N   (d)  B 2 D

Sol: 10 x 2 =  20  -> T
         7 x 2  =  14  -> N
         2 x 2  =   4   -> D     Hence option (c) is Odd One Out.
